Background:
Before the founding of the United States, Sinter Klaas distributed small gifts to Dutch children in New Amsterdam, the settlement that would later become New York City and shape the modern image of Santa Claus. The feast of St. Nokas is celebrated by many Europeans on December 6, dating back to the appreciation shown to a generous bishop in the fourth century for his gifts to the poor. When the Dutch settled in the New World, they brought this custom with them, which included a visit from the man they called Saint Sint Claas. Dr. Clement Clarke Moore's poem “The Night Before Christmas” changed the image of St. Nicholas in America by introducing flying reindeer and fat riders sliding down chimneys. Today, Santa Claus is an important part of Christmas, with stockings full of presents instead of shoes. Santa's gift-laden sleigh may not be the same as Sinter Klaas' visit, but the wonder of presents appearing in the dark of night remains. Art director Howard E. Paine created this childlike and festive stamp impression based on an illustration by Paul Rogers.
