Background:
Celebrations are times when people come together to celebrate a variety of joyous events. In 2015, a USPS stamp titled “Celebrate!” was released that was inspired by the Neon Art Museum in Los Angeles. Art Director Phil Jordan was drawn to the imagery and bright colors and knew that designing this stamp would be a challenge, but he was confident that the end result would be worth it. Therefore, he chose artist Michael Flechtner to design the stamp, who was inspired by a fireworks display, as the colors, bright lights and movement of the fireworks would represent the celebration well. Flechtner designed a 34-inch by 44-inch pattern and used heated glass tubes to bend it into letter and firework shapes. He used neon gas to create an orange-red color, argon gas and mercury to create a blue color, while other colors were created by a phosphor coating inside the tube. The result is one of the most colorful stamps in the United States, capturing the fun of celebrations and fireworks in bright neon.
