Background:
At Christmas, the story of the three wise men who came to Jesus is traditionally told. However, it is less well known that Jesus' family fled to Egypt after their departure. It is said that King Herod of Judea sent the three wise men to find and bring the newborn King of Judea. However, each of the wise men had a dream and was warned in the dream to avoid King Herod and take a different route home. King Herod was so enraged that he ordered all young boys under the age of two to be killed in order to eliminate Jesus as a contender for the throne.
That night, an angel also appeared to Joseph and warned him to flee to Egypt with his wife and the baby Jesus. With the baby in her arms, Mary rode on a donkey and Joseph accompanied her, following a star, through the dry desert. Jesus' family found refuge in Egypt and returned home after the death of King Herod.
Even today, we can still relate to the story of the Holy Family's escape. According to tradition, the donkey was originally mute during the Holy Family's escape, but when Herod's soldiers arrived while one or two members of the family were resting, the donkey was unable to wake Joseph, so he prayed that he would let out a loud bray to save the newborn king - hence the piercing braying of the donkey we know today.
