Background:

The Huntington Desert Garden in San Marino, California, is one of the oldest and largest succulent collections in the world. This garden was originally suggested to Henry Huntington by William Hertrich. After building a railroad to transport rocks, soil and plants, they collected desert plants from all over North, Central and South America. Today, the 10-hectare garden is home to more than 5,000 species of succulents and other desert plants in 60 landscaped beds. The Queen of the Night is the garden's largest cactus, weighing in at 20 tons, and other impressive plants include the 60-foot-tall Yucca filifera and the ancient horsetail palm. The garden also has a greenhouse with 3,000 delicate succulents that cannot withstand rain or cold. Roberto Bull Marx, a renowned Brazilian landscape architect, has praised the Huntington Desert Gardens as “the most extraordinary garden in the world”.
