Background:

The United States Postal Service will issue a new series of stamps to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act. The stamps feature photos of 20 endangered animals found in the United States and its territories, as well as two North American species that live near the U.S. border. The photos are part of researcher and photographer Joel Sartore's National Geographic Photo Ark project, which aims to document all species living in zoos, aquariums and sanctuaries. The Endangered Species Act was passed in the United States in 1973 to support conservation efforts on the ground and encourage action through education. Over the next 50 years, other countries followed suit. The Act provides a framework for the protection of endangered and threatened species and their habitats. More than 1,670 species in the US and 698 foreign species are protected under the Act.
